Alright Jumpstart Families ....
There's an old R&B song that asks the question,
"Do you know what today is?"
and in the next line, the answer is revealed as
"It's our Anniversary; Our Special Day!"
[If you want a refresher, here is the Youtube video link]
But, I digress....
It is however May 1st, College Decision Day!
The Process to Decision Day
If you have been in the college circuits for a while, you may know what the significance of this day is.
But if you are new to this world of navigating the college admissions process, I will take the time to explain.
💥 First, a HS Senior completes the college application process, and submits all required documentation (transcripts, test scores, essays, financial paperwork, etc).
💥 Then the college determines if they want to extend an invitation for the student to join their school.
💥 The student receives an acceptance letter(s), accompanied by the financial aid package offered by each college.
💥 The student has until May 1st to accept the offer from the college
💥 This acceptance usually involves submitting the enrollment deposit to secure a spot in the incoming class.
Hence why it is called College Decision Day or Signing Day!
Now, 5 Key Things to Consider
1. Most colleges deem the date as a deadline, so if you don't pay the deposit, you may lose your spot (think highly selective college or majors that have students on waitlists)
2. Have family conversations about the pros and cons of committing to one college vs another. A lot may impact that decision, especially in the realm of finances.
3. If you were placed on a Waitlist, this is when those decisions start rolling out. So be on the lookout!
4. Ask your students to double and triple-check their college portals for any news or updates. Some schools extend financial aid or scholarships last minute as an incentive to join their school.
5. If for any reason you need an extension, please don't hesitate to contact the college. Circumstances may have changed in your family dynamics, so talk to someone before making a decision.
Congratulations to all our kiddoes!
Wherever your path leads, you will do great things!
